Answer: 45 quarters and 42 nickels

Work Shown

q = number of quarters

87-q = number of nickels

0.25q + 0.05(87-q) = total value in dollars

0.25q + 0.05(87-q) = 13.35

0.25q + 4.35 - 0.05q = 13.35

0.20q + 4.35 = 13.35

0.20q = 13.35 - 4.35

0.20q = 9

q = 9/0.20

q = 45 is the number of quarters

87-q = 87-45 = 42 is the number of nickels

Check

45 quarters + 42 nickels = 45*(0.25) + 42*(0.05) = $13.35

The answers are confirmed.
