The Patriots promised to free any slaves who
fought on their side. Throughout the war, Hawley
held on to this promise of freedom. He looked
forward to the day he would no longer be enslaved.
Some aspects of army life were new to Hawley.
As a soldier, he was paid a small amount each month.
Before, he hadn't been paid. He ate and worked with
other soldiers, black and white. Before, he had
only worked with other enslaved people.
