As said in the question: "The first week they sold 44 TVs total" meaning that the combined total amount of TV's sold was 44, meaning x + y (which are just variables, not "known" amounts equates to 44.

x + y = 44

The second equation in the system represents the profits. Using the same knowledge from before, we don't know how many how many tv's of each were sold but we can use these variables to present that each 55-inch tv is worth $349 and each 65-inch tv is worth $469.

349x+469y = 17,516 represents this perfectly, thus making A our answer
