Directions: Read the information about the roles the U.S. has played as a country and world leader. Then,

answer the question below and complete the activity on the next few pages.
The U.S. rose to power as a world leader at the end of the 19th century, but did not become truly powerful until
World War I. During World War I, the United States had an advantage because it was not located in Europe.
As war raged on between European powers and their colonies, the U.S. stayed out. America isolated itself from
the fighting but gained economic power by selling weapons, ships, and armaments to European allies. It
profited from the war without joining in on the fighting until the last year of the war. Was this the right thing to
do? When should our country get involved and when should we stay isolated? What is our role as a world
leader?
