Background: The two major Chinese Dynasties during the Middle Ages were the Tang and the Song. The

Tang Dynasty lasted from 618 to 907 CE, while the Song Dynasty lasted from 960 to 1271 CE. The Song
Dynasty was divided into two separate periods. The Bei Song, or Northern Song, began in 960 CE and
were overthrown by the Jin in 1127 CE. The Nan Song, or Southern Song, relocated and lasted from
1127 to 1271 CE.
Instructions: You've invented a time machine and have decided to be a time-hopping tour guide. For
your first tour, you're planning a visit to the Tang and Song Dynasties for several of your friends. Put
together a touring brochure that includes the major sites of the Tang and Song that you intend to visit.
Major sites include government sites, religious sites, cultural sites, trading centers and battlefields. You
only need to include four of these sites in your brochure, but each entry must include the specific place
you intend to visit and a short explanation of why it's a must see site.
Refer to lesson 4.5 "The Middle Ages in Asia", 4.6 "The Legacy of the Tang and Song", 4.7 "Religion in
South and East Asia" and 4.8 "The Culture of the Tang and Song" for help in putting gathering
information for your brochure.

Government Site: The Grand Canal

Must-See Site: The Grand Canal

Explanation: The Grand Canal is a remarkable engineering marvel of the ancient world and a symbol of China's advanced infrastructure during both the Tang and Song Dynasties. This extensive man-made waterway stretched over 1,100 miles, connecting the Yellow River in the north to the Yangtze River in the south. It served as a crucial transportation artery for the efficient movement of goods and people, facilitating economic development and political unity. As we visit the Grand Canal, you'll witness the impressive locks, bridges, and historical remnants that showcase the innovative engineering of the time, underscoring the importance of this government-backed project in connecting and governing the vast empire.

I hope this helps!
