Explanation:

the area of poster board left

= area of poster board - area of square cut out

= 4x² + 14x - 8 - (x² + 8x + 16) ← distribute parenthesis by - 1

= 4x² + 14x - 8 - x² - 8x - 16 ← collect like terms

= (4x² - x² ) + (14x - 8x) + (- 8 - 16)

= 3x² + 6x + (- 24)

= (3x² + 6x - 24) in²
