Describe the role of plate tectonics in earthquakes

Tectonic plates move at about the same speed as your fingernails grow. When the earthquake happens, one plate goes in a rough upward position while the other goes under the up facing plate. Earthquakes don’t only happen like that. They can happen also when they collide in with each-other, almost touching tips with each-other. Images will be provided to show both ways. Here:
