If you cut away a triangle of area 59cm^2,the remaining area will be 85cm^2.Find the length of the side of the square before it was cut.?

Answer: side length = 12

Explanation

let x be the original area

Thus x - 59 = 85

=> x = 85 + 59
x = 144

Since we know the original shape is a square and Area of a square = side x side.

Find side length:

A = a^2

But A = 144

144 = a^2
12 = a

So the side of the square b4 it was cut is 12 cm
