At the Olympics in 1928, Bobby Pearce won the gold in single sculling. He also won the hearts of all those who saw him win. Bobby Pearce was born in Sydney, Australia. His father was a great sculling champion. Sculling is a discipline in rowing when the participant rows with both his hands. By the time he was five, Bobby was sculling around in Sydney Harbour. At the age of six, he won his first race, defeating fourteen-year-olds. By the time he was twenty, Bobby was the sculling champion in Australia. The following year he went to Amsterdam to compete in the Olympics. In the finals at the Olympics , he competed against Ken Myers from USA. From the start of the race, Bobby was in the lead. At the half way stage, he was still leading and it seemed that Bobby could easily win. Then suddenly, something happened. Bobby heard a shout from the bank and looked over his shoulder. He saw a duck and a brood of ducklings swimming across the canal. They were swimming into the course of the boat and the boat was going to run into them. The poor birds had no idea that they were in the middle of an Olympic race. Immediately, Bobby slowed his boat down. Myers was catching up very fast. The people on the shore were urging Bobby to keep moving. However, Bobby waited patiently until all the ducklings were out of harm's way. Then he picked up speed and went on to win the race easily. Of all the Olympians, it was Bobby who won everybody's heart. A Dutch newspaper wrote, 'He's won the goodwill of the children of Amsterdam. His friends in the Australian Olympic team were not surprised by the incident. ' Bobby is that kind of bloke', they said. Bobby Pearce competed in sculling competition for 33 years and retired from this sport in 1945. In his long career, Bobby never lost a race.

Bobby Pearce's triumph at the 1928 Olympics in single sculling didn't just win him the gold medal but also the admiration of all who witnessed his incredible feat. Hailing from Sydney, Australia, Bobby was introduced to sculling at a young age by his father, a sculling champion himself. Bobby's first win came at the age of six, and by the time he was twenty, he had already claimed the title of sculling champion of Australia. Bobby then went on to compete in the Olympics held in Amsterdam where he faced off against Ken Myers from the United States in the finals. Bobby held onto his lead from the beginning of the race, and it looked like he would easily claim the victory until he saw a duck and her ducklings swimming across the canal during the race. Bobby slowed down and waited patiently until the birds were out of harm's way before picking up speed and winning the race. His act of kindness and sportsmanship captured the hearts of everyone, and he became a beloved figure. Bobby continued to participate in sculling competitions for 33 years and never lost a race.
