In April 1975, Khmer Rouge, Pol Pot's group, occupied Phnom Penh in Cambodia. The city's 2 million people were exhausted by years of fighting. They welcomed the invaders. They hoped that they would be able to build a new society with these heavily armed men. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Within days, the Khmer Rouge drove them all into the countryside to become workers in agricultural communes. They emptied Cambodia's other towns and put an end to money, markets, schools, newspapers, religious practices, and private property. The Khmer Rouge hated anyone with money or education. They believed in the empowerment of the rural poor.
