Three Positive Character Traits of the Time Traveller:

Curiosity: "I worked with passionate interest, until I had finished, for the day I was curious to know the history of the well" (Chapter 1).

Resourcefulness: "I suddenly found myself wriggling through it, and it was just as black as pitch" (Chapter 2).

Bravery: "I gripped the saddle with knees and teeth, and pondered. 'I must keep talking to keep up my courage,' I said...I gripped with both hands still, and involuntarily my feet left the ground" (Chapter 3).

Three Negative Character Traits of the Time Traveller:

Impatience: "I had been too much excited by eagerness to get out of that cramping crypt into the fresh air, to be able to control the burning fever of curiosity which possessed me" (Chapter 2).

Impulsiveness: "I don't even believe in the present...There is no logical reason why anything should exist, and yet there is the fact" (Chapter 4).

Arrogance: "You are quite right, I am a profound pessimist...the fact is, it is all about us and our little lives, just as much as if it were a hundred thousand million miles away" (Chapter 5).

Physical Description of the Time Traveller:

On the first night the Time Traveller met with the group of men, he is described as having "an air of such genuine confidence" with "his grey eyes shining brightly" (Chapter 1). On the night the Time Traveller was late for dinner, he is described as having "dishevelled hair" and "a coat covered with dust" (Chapter 2).

Character: The Medical Man

Occupation: Medical Practitioner

The Medical Man

Positive Character Traits:

Knowledgeable: "The Medical Man got up out of his chair and peered into the thing. 'It's blood, is what it is...'" (Chapter 2, page 14).

Objective: "The Medical Man rose, came to the lamp, and examined the flowers. 'The gynaeceum's odd,' he said, 'those ragged things behind, those doors...'" (Chapter 4, page 28).

Negative Character Traits:

Skeptical: "If it's on the market I'll buy it, but I don't believe in mysterious things" (Chapter 1, page 6).

Dismissive: "The Medical Man looked into his face and, with a certain hesitation, told him he had only a few hours to live" (Chapter 6, page 43).

Speculations as to why the Medical Man was invited to the dinner party by the Time Traveller:

The Medical Man was most likely invited to the dinner party because of his expertise in medicine and science. The Time Traveller was interested in sharing his theories about time travel and the Medical Man's knowledge would be valuable in analyzing and discussing his ideas.
