How were the shooters mentally able to execute women, children and men face-to-face and often with hand pistols 6 to 8 inches from the victims head? Even though the shooters became covered in blood and brains why did they continue to shoot hour after hour, day after day, week after week and month after month? How did German and other shooters justify murder to themselves?

Hitler had a strong influence on Germany and Austria even before her rose to power. In his novel, 'Mein Kampf', he blamed the Jews for the loss of WWI, so when he became Chancellor, he made sure the Jews and other "undesirables" were depicted as inhuman. So that, most-likely, made it far easier for soldiers to shoot innocent people with no signs of remorse.
