Answer:

Why did prohibition lead to an increase in organized crime?

Prohibition lead to an increase in organized crime during the 1920s because organized crime originated from national Prohibition. The Volstead Act (18th Amendment), came into effect, prohibiting the manufacture, sale and transportation of alcoholic beverages. With the association of bootlegging, crime rates began to increase. Drinking alcohol, began to cause a rise in criminal activity and created a way for gangs to obtain money and income. This soon spread the word to the people who then began turning to gangs for liquor. The more the gangs sold liquor, the more richer they became.

Do you see any parallels to the law today?

Yes, there are parallels to the law today. Such as cargo theft, fraud, robbery, kidnapping for ransom, cybercrime, money laundering, extortion, armed robbery, counterfeiting, and the demanding of “protection” payments.
