Why is the period from the 1860s to 1900 known as the Gilded Age?

Mark Twain called the late 19th century the "Gilded Age." By this, he meant that the period was glittering on the surface but corrupt underneath.

What factors combined to create the Progressive Movement for reform during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries?

Progressives sought to address the problems caused by rapid industrialization, urbanization, immigration, and political corruption; and by the enormous concentration of industrial ownership in monopolies. They were alarmed by the spread of slums, poverty, and what they perceived as the exploitation of labor.

Was the Progressive Era a success or failure?

The Progressive movement, unfortunately, was unsuccessful in regulating and elevating working conditions, achieving women's rights, and Black suffrage and equality. The progressive movement brought about many governmental reforms. Direct democracy was easily the biggest goal and achievement of the progressive movement.
