Approximate cost

We know that

1. Rental fee: $837

2. Total distance: 900 miles

3. 6 miles/gallon

4. Each gallon costs $1.40

The mover needs

5. A handcart at $5

6. Two dozen furniture pads at $2 per dozen

Total: $2 · 2 = $4

7. 3 wardrobe boxes at $7.50 each

Total: $7.50 · 3 = $22.5

8. An auto towbar at $69

In order to find the total cost we need to add all the previous expenses.

First, we add all the costs that we already know: the rental fee and the things the mover needs:

837 + 5 + 4 + 22.5 + 69 = 877.5

We just need to find the cost due to the distance:

In order to do that we must find how many gallons it takes to move 900 miles, knowing thatthe truck gets 6 miles per gallon. We just divide 900 by 6

900 ÷ 6 = 150

Then, it need 150 gallons. Since each costs $1.40, the total cost of the gallons is

150 · 1.40 = 210

Now we can add it to the rest of the things:

877. 5 + 210 = 1087.5

Answer: the approximate cost is $1087.5
