Let's say you've never made a cake, and you want to bake one for your sister's birthday. You open up two cookbooks to compare recipes for carrot cake, and you find two very different first steps: Explaining a process starts with clear, simple sentences.

Step 1: Grease a square baking pan and dust it with flour. This will keep the cake from sticking to the pan.

Step 1: Find a pan that you can bake with that's pretty deep, though not too deep. Put butter or margarine on a piece of wax paper and cover the entire inside of the pan, then get out some flour and sprinkle it in the pan. Shake the pan so it's pretty well covered, but not too heavily. After all, you do this so the cake won't get stuck on the bottom of the pan, and you want to get it out of the pan; otherwise, you can't eat it!

Take a careful look at these two passages and answer the question below.

The first example is better because it is shorter, clearer, and provides a simple and concise instruction for the first step. It uses plain language, avoids unnecessary details, and clearly explains the purpose of greasing and dusting the baking pan. The second example, on the other hand, is longer, more complex, and includes unnecessary details that may confuse or overwhelm a beginner baker.
