James flew 200 miles south. He changed planes then flew east 400 miles. To fly directly home, James needs to fly __ miles.

Your a value is going south so

a= 200

Your b value is going east which is 400 so

b= 400


a^(2) + b^(2) = c^(2)


200^(2) + 400^(2) = c^(2)


40000 + 160000 = c^(2)


√(200000) = c

Therefore it will takes James approx 447.21 miles to fly home
