For her parents' anniversary party, Sue is considering using one of two venues. A hotel in Bluepoint will cost $819 for a reservation, plus $51 per person. A restaurant in the same city will cost $52 per person, in addition to $788 for the reservation. In order to make the best decision, Sue figures out how many attendees it would take to have the venues cost the same amount. What would the total cost be? How many attendees would that be?

The cost at each venue would be $ ___ if the party had ___
attendees.

Answer:

$2400 for 31 attendees (at both venues)

Explanation:

x = # of attendees

hotel: 819 + 51x

restaurant: 788 + 52x

818 + 51x = 788+ 52x

x = 818 - 788 = 31

cost: 819 + 51(31) = 2400 hotel

check the restaurant, just to make sure...

788 + 52(31) = 2400
