Given

A TV originally priced at $680 is on sale for 15% off. There is then a 6.2% sales tax. Find the price after including the discount and sales tax.

Solution

Convert tax percentage into a decimal by moving the decimal point two spaces to the left.

\begin{gathered} 15\text{ \% =}(15)/(100)=0.15 \\ \\ \text{and} \\ 6.2\text{ \% =}(6.2)/(100)=0.062 \end{gathered}

A TV originally priced at $680 is on sale for 15% off

0.15*680\text{ = \$102}
\begin{gathered} \text{The discounted price is now} \\ 680-102=578 \end{gathered}

There is then a 6.2% sales tax

sales tax is charged on the reduced /discounted price

\begin{gathered} 0.062*578=\text{ \$35.836} \\ \end{gathered}

578+35.836=\text{ \$}613.836

The final answer

\text{ \$}613.84
