GIDEON V. WAINWRIGHT

The most significant effect of Gideon v. Wainwright (1963) on local governments or jurisdictions was the guaranteeing of each criminal prosecutor's access to a judicially (and thus state-funded) lawyer. According to the Supreme Court's decision, states are mandated under the Constitution purpose of providing legal counsel for people accused of crimes accused of serious crimes who are unable to pay for services.
