Lab: Weather Patterns

Summary- In this lab activity, you will use a virtual model to determine the combinations of relative humidity, air temperature, and air pressure that create different weather phenomena and patterns.
Lab Procedure
Prepare for the lab.
a) Read through this guide before you begin, so you know the expectations for this lab.
b) If anything is not clear to you, be sure to ask your teacher for assistance.

Open the virtual lab.
Click on each of the three question marks next to humidity, air temperature & air pressure. In your own words write a brief description of each factor that affects weather. (15 pts)
Factor
Brief Description
Humidity

Air Temperature

Air Pressure

Click “start lab”
Snow
Before you click “create snow” read the description of how snow is formed and in your own words, describe how snow forms in the box below. (5 pts)
Answer:

Click “create snow”
Use what you know and have learned to choose the descriptions of relative humidity, air temperature, and air pressure that would create snow.
Press the “Check” button.
If your descriptions are correct, snow will appear in the model. Proceed to the next step.
If your descriptions are incorrect, a different weather phenomenon will appear. Close the feedback bubble by pressing the “x” button. Repeat Steps until you get the right combination. Proceed to the next step.
Record the correct combination in the Data table at the end of this lab. Proceed.
Rain
Before you click “create rain” read the description of how rain is formed and in your own words, describe how rain forms. (5 pts)
Answer:

Click “create rain”
Choose the descriptions of relative humidity, air temperature, and air pressure that would create rain.
Press the “Check” button.
If your descriptions are correct, rain will appear in the model. Proceed to the next step.
If your descriptions are incorrect, a different weather phenomenon will appear. Close the feedback bubble by pressing the “x” button. Repeat until you get the right combination. Proceed to the next step..
Record the correct combination in the Data table at the end of this lab. Proceed..
Thunderstorm
Before you click “create thunderstorm” read the description of how thunderstorms form and in your own words, describe how thunderstorms form. (5 pts)
Answer:

Click “create a thunderstorm”
Choose the descriptions of relative humidity, air temperature, and air pressure that would create a thunderstorm.
Press the “Check” button.
If your descriptions are correct, a thunderstorm will appear in the model. Proceed to the next step.
If your descriptions are incorrect, a different weather phenomenon will appear. Close the feedback bubble by pressing the “x” button. Repeat until you get the right combination. Proceed to the next step.
Record the correct combination in the Data table at the end of the lab. Proceed.
Fog
Before you click “create fog” read the description of how fog is formed and in your own words, describe how fog forms. (5 pts)
Answer:

Click “create fog”.
Choose the descriptions of relative humidity, air temperature, and air pressure that would create fog.
Press the “Check” button.
If your descriptions are correct, fog will appear in the model. Proceed to the next step.
If your descriptions are incorrect, a different weather phenomenon will appear. Close the feedback bubble by pressing the “x” button. Repeat until you get the right combination. Proceed to the next step.
Record the correct combination in the Data table at the end of the lab. Proceed.
Clear Skies
Before you click “create clear skies” read the description of how clear skies form and in your own words, describe how clear skies form. (5 pts)
Answer:

Click “create clear skies”
Choose the descriptions of relative humidity, air temperature, and air pressure that would create clear skies.
Press the “Check” button.
If your descriptions are correct, clear skies will appear in the model. Proceed to the next step.
If your descriptions are incorrect, a different weather phenomenon will appear. Close the feedback bubble by pressing the “x” button. Repeat until you get the right combination. Proceed the next step..
