State of the Union

The State of the Union Address is a constitutional requirement for the President of the United States. They are required to inform Congress on what has been going on in the Executive Branch side of the government. This has evolved into a night of ceremony, pageantry, and ritual where the President speaks at the Capitol in front of the entire Congress, the entire Supreme Court and other members of the federal government. The President reports on the accomplishments of the past year and charts a path forward for the year to come.


I would like you to watch the State of the Union Address and reflect on the speech in a 3 paragraph reflection. The prompt for the paragraphs below are suggestions of topics to discuss. You do not need to complete every single one.

Paragraph 1:

The State of the Union is full of rituals, ceremony, and pageantry. In the beginning especially. It is all supposed to represent values like separations of power, checks and balances, and other democratic ideals. Pick one formality or ritual you saw in the beginning of the Address (before the President actually speaks) and relate it back to one of the principles of American democracy we've discussed in class. How do these rituals, formalities, and pageantry reflect America’s values?


Paragraph 2:

In the State of the Union Address, the President will report and proclaim what the government has accomplished in the past year with them as leader. Pick one accomplishment the President mentions having done and express your opinion about it. Did you like it? Do you have questions about it? Is it good for the country?


Paragraph 3:

The President often uses the State of the Union Address to propose big ideas or changes that they'd like to see in the year to come. This is where the President can pressure Congress to act on something the President wants to see done. What new idea, change, or priority did the President state they'd like to get done in 2022? Do you agree with this idea? Explain your opinion.

On February 24, 2022, the war between Ukraine and Russia officially started. It was a shock to some and an unfortunate but unsurprising revelation to others. Many countries gave support through donations of money or weaponry. President Biden has been quite optimistic and forthcoming about his thoughts on the war; stating that "his Russian counterpart would not scare the US and its allies". The US is still giving support; arming Ukrainian citizens. America's involvement in this war has provided a crucial element that Ukraine can rely on. While many wish America could do more, there are limits. There is so much the US can do without overstepping boundaries. Russia's arsenal of nuclear weapons has limited the US involvement in the war. The US should continue providing help for Ukraine while attempting to reach an agreement or peace with Russia.
