Tackling Moral Challenges in Science: A Reflection on Frankenstein

Science has always been intertwined with morality. It is our challenge to balance the tremendous potential of scientific discoveries with our ethical standards. Frankenstein, Mary Shelley’s iconic novel, stands as a testament to the moral considerations of science and to this day serves as a reminder to think twice before delving into an unknown field.

As scientific breakthroughs become increasingly commonplace, our moral boundaries are being broken. In the medical field, for example, scientists are experimenting with gene editing and embryonic cell manipulation to create designer babies and so-called “superhumans”. These interventions have the potential to bring about drastic changes and even revolutionize the human species.

Although many of these advancements are exciting and hold great promise, it is important to consider their moral implications. Who has the right to choose the specific traits that are desirable in a person? Who is to determine the definition of a “perfect” human being? Are we prepared to face the consequences of our choices? These questions and more must be addressed when considering scientific interventions in the field of morality.

Furthermore, there are unintended consequences that can arise when tinkering with nature. In Frankenstein, the protagonist unleashes a creature that was not meant to be, leading to disastrous and unforeseen results. Similarly, in our society today, the consequences of tampering with nature are still unknown and could ultimately override our capacity for control.

Overall, science offers myriad possibilities, but with advancements come moral dilemmas that we must confront. Although a balance between morality and science is possible, a delicate equilibrium needs to be achieved in order to ensure that our actions are just and reasonable. Frankenstein serves as a warning to be conscious of the implications of our actions, for if we are to progress, we must do so with caution, consideration, and accountability.
