The car pool system was a form of transportation that allowed people to save money by sharing a ride. During the era of gas rationing in the early 1940s, this system became popular. With fewer cars driving around and expensive gas prices, people turned to car pooling in order to save money. A person would act as a driver, picking up a group of people from their homes and taking them to their respective workplaces. This saved everyone time and money since the driver could have more passengers in the car and only had to pay for a single tank of gas. It was seen as a social activity during World War II since it brought people from different walks of life together to share a ride. It also enabled people to build relationships with their fellow passengers.
