"Yemi, what a surprise!" exclaimed Mirko as one of his regular customers walked through the front door of The DVD Hut. It had been a slow night, and Mirko felt his boredom disappear as Yemi wandered over to the counter.
"My friends are all working tonight," Yemi replied unhappily. "We usually rent movies together, but it looks like I'm on my own."
"What kind of movies do you like to watch?" Mirko asked.
"Let's see," mused Yemi. "Trisha and Jake always want to rent action movies, and Ute and Finn always pick science fiction. Myrtle is the only person in our group who enjoys romantic comedies."
"That's fine for them," said Mirko. "I asked what kind of movies you like to watch." Yemi stared at the shop owner in surprise.
"I . . . I've never thought about it before," Yemi admitted. "I always let my friends decide for me."
"Well, it is time for you to think for yourself," said Mirko. "It is never good to blindly follow other people. What kind of things do you enjoy?"
"I like to read about U.S. history," Yemi said. "Do you think I'd enjoy a documentary about the Civil War?"
"I've lived a long life, Yemi," Mirko told him. "I've learned many things. I'm going to tell you something important. At the end of the day, you are responsible for your own choices. You have to learn to become your own person, or you'll end up a mere shadow of the people around you."
"You're right," said Yemi. "I am going to rent this Civil War documentary because it's exactly what I want to see. I don't care what anyone else thinks."
"Excellent!" Mirko replied with a smile.
