A large cheese pizza costs $12.99. Each additional topping costs $1.50. How many toppings can you get if you have $20 to spend of a pizza.

Answer:

4

Explanation:

First subtract the 12.99 from 20.

20 - 12.99

= 7.01

Now you know you have $7.01 to spend on toppings. You could guess-and-check or divide to find the answer.

1 topping is 1.50,

2 toppings are 3.00

3 toppings are 4.50

4 toppings are 6.00

5 is going to be too much, so 4 it is!.

Or divide:

7.01 ÷ 1.50

= 4.67333...

This means 4 toppings.

If your teacher/text/program is expecting you to write an inequality, then:

let x = number of toppings

1.50 is price per topping

12.99 is base price (cheese pizza)

y is total cost.

y <= 20

1.50x + 12.99 <= 20

subtract 12.99

1.50x <= 7.01

divide by 1.50

x <= 4.6733...

x can be no more than 4 toppings.
