Explanation:

remember, y = f(x)

so, the question is really for what x is y = 1 ?

and what is the y-value for x = -1 ?

a)

when we imagine a horizontal line through y = 1, at what points (x-value) does this line cross the function graph ?

as we can see, at x = -2 and x = 2.

pick one for your answer.

b)

now we imagine a vertical line through x = -1.

at what point (y-value) does this line cross the function graph ?

as we can see, at y = 4.

f(-1) = 4
