Culture encompasses much more than a person's preferred foods, holidays, or language. Our culture serves as the foundation on which we construct our identities. It affects our interactions with the outside world, our worldviews, and our expectations. Each of us has a culture, and the majority of us have identities that include elements of several cultures. Based on common situations and life experiences, similar personalities, related interests, shared ancestry, and social identities like race, ethnicity, and gender, students may identify with characters. Students are more positively engaged in their learning process when the materials are mirrors (i.e., asking questions and completing assignments). Culturally sensitive resources can increase student engagement, raise academic performance, help the development of written and spoken language, and improve reading comprehension. Mirror-based materials can connect with window-based materials. Students appreciate finding out about people from other backgrounds, opinions, and cultures.
