how do we balance the number of moles of magnesium and the number of moles of oxygen in magnesium oxide?

The number of moles in magnesium is the same as the number of moles in oxygen because magnesium oxide is MgO. Because they have the same subscripts the mole ratio is 1:1 so every mole of magnesium is the same as the number of moles of oxygen
