What does it mean to be proportional?
For two numbers to be proportional, they need to be directly increasing or decreasing in a constant ratio.
To simplify these ratios, we can use division.
- (7 ÷ 7 = 1)
- (14 ÷ 7 = 2)
So, 7: 14 simplified is 1: 2.
- (4 ÷ 4 = 1)
- (8 ÷ 4 = 2)
So, 4: 8 simplified is 1: 2.
If these ratios are both simplified to equal 1 :2, they are proportional.
