Dialogue: The words and/or conversation exchanged between two people or groups of people.

Evidence: Pieces of information in support of a specific idea

Explicit: Information that describes something in close detail.

Figurative language: Expression through adjectives and phrases that describe seemingly unrelated situations or objects by using comparison of senses.

Imagery: Use of one’s senses written out in words to create a visual picture in someone’s head.

Implicit: Indirectly stated, implied but not spoken word-for-word

Inference: An educated guess based on reasoning and learned information.

Literary nonfiction: A story that is accurate in facts and has characters that would fit in where and when the story takes place, but did not actually take place during said time and/or place.

Message: A point or idea that is the overall theme of a story, what the author wanted to convey to the reader.

Narrative: A story of connected events over a span of time, usually told by the person who experienced it.

Perspective: The way in which someone sees something or situation, the point of view of a story.

Purpose: The reason the author wrote a passage, what they wanted to convey when they wrote a passage.

Setting: The frame in which a story takes place; time, location, date, etc.
