x = 63° , y = 83°

Explanation:

In a trapezium

each lower base angle is supplementary to the upper base angle on the same side , then

x + 117° = 180° ( subtract 117° from both sides )

x = 63°

the sum of the 3 angles in the outer triangle = 180° , that is

x + y + 34° = 180° ( substitute x = 63° )

63° + y + 34° = 180°

97° + y = 180° ( subtract 97° from both sides )

y = 83°
