Solving an equation with variables on both sides:

  • Isolate for the variable - get the variables together on one side of the equation and get integers on the other side of the equation
  • use inverse operations to do so

1. expand to get rid of the parenthesis

4x+5x-2=-16+2x

2. combine like terms

9x-2=-16+2x

3. use inverse operations to get variable terms on one side and the integer term on the other side

9x-2x-2+2=-16+2x-2x+2

  • moving -2 and +2x we need to add and subtract them from their respective sides of the equation

4. combine like terms

7x=-14

5. isolate for x

x=(-14)/(7)

x=
x=-2
