The Treatise on Tolerance (1763), which argues for religious tolerance and criticizes religious fanaticism, particularly that of the Catholics, was Voltaire's first important ethical work in his fight against "l'infâme." He also indicts the beliefs encircling religions. The book was promptly outlawed. Without any of the Church, Voltaire wished for religion. For various reasons, Voltaire's ballad La Henriade about Henry IV was not welcomed by the Catholic officials when it was published in France. As a result, Voltaire made the decision to fly to England in 1726 and publish his work there.
