Answer:

x = 1, y = - 5

Explanation:

2x + 2y = - 8 → (1)

- 13x + 7y = - 48 → (2)

multiplying (1) by 7 and (2) by - 2 and adding will eliminate y

14x + 14y = - 56 → (3)

26x - 14y = 96 → (4)

add (3) and (4) term by term to eliminate y

40x + 0 = 40

40x = 40 ( divide both sides by 40 )

x = 1

substitute x = 1 into either of the 2 equations and solve for y

substituting into (1)

2(1) + 2y = - 8

2 + 2y = - 8 ( subtract 2 from both sides )

2y = - 10 ( divide both sides by 2 )

y = - 5

then solution is x = 1, y = - 5
