The Gettysburg Address given by Lincoln was just 272 words and took 2 minutes and 17 seconds. In comparison, the "I Have A Dream" speech given by Martin Luther King, Jr, was 17 minutes and 1,667 words. If both men spoke at a steady rate, about how many more words per minute did Lincoln say than King?

Answer:

To compare the speaking rate of Lincoln and King, we need to find out how many words per minute each of them spoke.

First, we'll find Lincoln's speaking rate:

He gave a 272-word speech that lasted 2 minutes and 17 seconds.

we can convert 2 minutes and 17 seconds to seconds by multiplying 2 minutes by 60 seconds/minute and adding 17 seconds, which gives us 137 seconds.

Now we can divide the number of words by the number of seconds to find the words per second:

272 words / 137 seconds = 2 words/second

To convert words per second to words per minute we need to multiply by 60 seconds/minute:

2 words/second * 60 seconds/minute = 120 words/minute

Now we'll find King's speaking rate:

He gave a 1,667-word speech that lasted 17 minutes and 1 second.

We can convert 17 minutes and 1 second to seconds by multiplying 17 minutes by 60 seconds/minute and adding 1 second, which gives us 1021 seconds.

Now we can divide the number of words by the number of seconds to find the words per second:

1,667 words / 1021 seconds = 1.633 words/second

To convert words per second to words per minute we need to multiply by 60 seconds/minute:

1.633 words/second * 60 seconds/minute = 98.00 words/minute

Now we can subtract King's speaking rate from Lincoln's speaking rate to find out how many more words per minute Lincoln said than King:

120 words/minute - 98.00 words/minute = 22 words/minute

So Lincoln spoke 22 words per minute more than King.
