How did the bayonet “personify” the offensive spirit?

Answer: In many ways, the bayonet was a return to the concept of an aggressive method of warfare. Traditionally used by the colonial powers such as France and Britain in the battle against much less well-armed opponents, it was considered a positive example of a so-called 'attacking spirit'.
