A frame around a family portrait has a perimeter of 94 inches. The length of the frame is 7 inches less than twice the width. Find the length and width of the frame.

Explanation:

Let l be the length and w be the width of the frame.

We have 2(l + w) = 94 and l = 2w - 7.

Therefore 2[(2w - 7) + w] = 94.

=> 3w - 7 = 47

=> 3w = 54

=> w = 18

l = 2(18) - 7 = 36 - 7 = 29

Hence the length of the frame is 29in and the width of the frame is 18in.
