A car rental company's standard charge includes an initial fee plus an additional fee for each mile driven. The standard charge S (in dollars) is given by thefunction S = 0.40M + 15.75 , where M is the number of miles driven.Let C be the total charge (in dollars) for a rental that includes insurance. Write an equation relating C to M. Simplify your answer as much as possible.The company also offers an option to insure the car against damage. The insurance charge I (in dollars) is given by the function I = 0.15M + 3.70 .

ANSWER :

C = 0.55M + 19.45

EXPLANATION :

From the problem, we have two functions :

The standard charge :

S=0.40M+15.75

and the insurance charge :

I=0.15M+3.70

The total charge (C) is the sum of standard and insurance charge.

That will be :

\begin{gathered} C=S+I \\ C=(0.40M+15.75)+(0.15M+3.70) \\ C=0.55M+19.45 \end{gathered}

The answer is C = 0.55M + 19.45
