The Americans were surprised and worried that the Russians were successful in their space program. It prompted the Americans to speed up their own missile and space programs. Agencies such as National Aeronautics and Space Agency was created in July 1958 and the Defense Advance Research in February 1958 and other related institution were given $100 million budget by congress to expand their research in space missile projects. This also heightened the Cold War as both sides now competed as to who would be able to be successful in space exploration.
