The Enlightenment was a philosophical movement which worked to change the conservative ideas in the 18th century. The main goals were liberty, tolerance, as well as ending the abuses of the Catholic church and the state. The Enlightenment movement in France was opposed to the principle of absolute monarchy and the rigid dogmas of the church.
