What was the role of European plantations in the growth of slavery ?

Assuming you're referring to the plantations that Europeans had in the Americas, the effect was overwhelming, since the high demand for crops grown on these plantations meant there was a high demand for slaves to work on the fields, which increased importation rates of the slaves themselves dramatically.
