How is 3^2 different from (-3)^2?

Given the following question:

3^2 = 3 * 3 = 9

(-3)^2 = -3 * -3 = 9

They are different because one is the multiplication of negative integers while the other isn't. Since a negative times a negative is a positive.

They are similar because they both have the same answers.
