The ideas of the Enlightenment influenced governments during the eighteenth century. The main ideas of the enlightenment were freedom, progress, tolerance, reason and the end of the abuse of power by the church and the state. The main themes of the liberation movement in France were individual freedom and religious tolerance. This was in direct opposition to the views enforced by the Roman Catholic Church. These ideals led to the French Revolution in France and then spread to other European countries.
