Both Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson claimed to represent the interests of the “common man” and laid claim to the adjective “democratic,” especially in contrast to their political opponents. Which one had the better claim to these titles? Why?

This is of course a somewhat subjective question, but most would agree that it was Jackson who actually had the better claim to these titles, since when Jackson was running for President he actually had to appeal to the "common man", whereas Jefferson had not.
