How did the location of the Battle of Somme, Verdun and Ypres factor into the amount of lives taken, as well as the impact of these battles?

These battles are all characterized by a relatively small area where massive amounts of artillery shells have been used. Due to these, the area where these battles took place in turn made every single one of these battles a killing field where numerous soldiers were dying by the minute when the shells were starting to drop on the battlefield. In essence, in every one of these battles, unthinkable amounts of soldiers were killed off in a very fast period.
