If I divide the weights of 17/10 I will get 1.7.
And if I divide the pound of 1/4 I will get 0.25

1 7/10 - 1/4 =
1 14/20 - 5/20 = 1 9/20
1 14/20 + 1 9/20 = 2 23/20
2 23/20 = 3 3/20
3 3/20 pounds is the total weight of the two boxes.
