I believe the answer is: he wanted to show the colonists why it was so clear that the colonies should separate from Britain

To ensure this, Thomas paine remind the readers on how unfairly the British Government had treated the colonists by keep increasing higher amount of tax payment to the the British fund their war. Because of this pamphlets, the revolutionary armies managed to obtain a large number of new recruits for the revolution.

The most likely reason Thomas Paine published his American Crisis pamphlets under the name “Common Sense” is because he wanted to show the colonists why it was so clear that the colonies should separate from Britain--making a clear case that even the "common" relatively uneducated people could understand.
