Let x be the red peppers

and y be the green peppers

Meredith picked four times as many green peppers as red peppers

So green peppers = 4 times red peppers

The equation becomes y = 4x

she picked a total of 20 peppers. So x + y = 20

Now we plug in 4x for y

x + 4x = 20

5x = 20 ( divide by 5 on both sides)

x = 4

Number of red peppers = 4

We know , y = 4x = 4(4) = 16

So number green peppers = 16

She picked 16 green peppers

The correct answer is that she picked 16 green peppers. We can work this out because 16 + 4 = 20, and 4 x 4 is 16, so therefore there were 16 green peppers and 4 red peppers.
