Something I like about the chief Elder is his open-mindness and love. Unlike the other adults in their bleak world, who smack childrens legs when they don't understand something or misbehave, the Chief Elder strives to help (forgot kid's name, it's been 4 years since I read this book, put it here) understand the world instead of punishing him for not understanding it.
